In this small work Carlo Mattioli depicts a solitary tree in the middle of the countryside. This is a typical subject of Mattioli and wants to represent the loneliness of modern man. The tree's crown is beige, the meadow on which the tree grows is red, and the sky is dark beige. They are therefore non-natural colors, but for Mattioli it was not interesting to represent reality, even though he was an eminently figurative painter, but to try his hand at the balance of colors which in any case expressed the mood of the moment.
