In this work by Bernard Aubertin the matches are glued to a board painted red and with the flammable part towards the inside. The smoke resulting from lighting the matches forms blackish tongues that develop inside the circle while ash gray halos form near the heads of the matches. The size of the tongues of smoke and halos depends on their position and on the air currents that possibly act on the work. This gives the work uniqueness even for similar shapes.
